1. Another week, another apology for not posting since my last 7 Quick Takes. Still no replacement power cord for my laptop, which means little time for writing at home. Sigh.
2. Last week I told you about my adventure with walnut butter. This week I made cashew butter. I had to add a bit of olive oil to the cashews to get it to come together, but otherwise it's made the same way as the walnut variety. It is so tasty, especially on celery.
3. Also from the "I love my food processor" file: I made my first attempt at hummus this morning. It's pretty darn good, but I used a really basic recipe (just chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, and garlic). I think I can improve on it a lot when I have more time. Once I've developed a more exciting version, I'll try to share what I did here.
4. Everyone warned me that it would be quiet around here once the students were gone, but I didn't quite anticipate it being this quiet. It is completely dead. Several of my profs have been out of the office this week, which doesn't help.
5. It was EIGHTY-SIX DEGREES yesterday when Paul and I went for our after-work walk (we walk around campus or our apartment complex on Tuesday/Thursday and go to the gym Monday/Wednesday/Friday). It was amazing. I swear I could feel my frozen bone marrow finally thaw for good.
6. The passage of this bill is great news for Tennessee. It's not quite as much progress as eliminating the inane grocery store/wine and liquor restrictions would be, but it's nice to see our legislature recognizing that (a) people want to and should be allowed to purchase wine from out of state and (b) adults shouldn't be prevented from purchasing a perfectly legal product just because of opposition from the Southern Baptists and the (all too strong) TN liquor lobby. Hopefully the governor will not block this small win for consumer freedom.
7. This week, Paul and I have started doing something I swore I wouldn't -- we're watching LOST. A friend left the DVDs of the first four seasons with us for the summer, and I hate to admit it, but we're (at least I'm) getting hooked. We're only a little under 1/3 of the way through the first season, but I can definitely see why everyone is so obsessed with the series. I know it gets weirder as it goes on, but I don't actually find that all that off-putting (my love of Fringe is well-documented, after all). I had mostly stayed away at this point because I tend to stubbornly oppose everything that has such a huge bandwagon following, and I'd never seen an episode before we started with the DVDs. I don't really regret giving in on this one, though. The moment I tell you I've started watching American Idol, though, please just shoot me.
